From a converted garage studio in the town of Lovendegem near Ghent, Belgian artist Ann Vincent creates magnificent sculptural candles. During the 2020 lockdown, the young photography graduate started experimenting with wax, creating figures that soon turned into candles and which instantly garnered much attention in the design world for their aesthetic intrigue. Ann Vincent sketches out the shape of each candle before creating a silicone mould into which she pours a blend of soy and paraffin wax. Once hardened, the candle is then hand-finished with a sculpting knife, a process which leaves small details, irregularities and the occasional fingerprint, rendering each one entirely unique. Whether you choose to burn them or simply admire them, the beautifully organic shapes and earthy colours of Ann Vincent’s candles make them as much a piece of art as they are a decorative object.
