Steiff

Created by Margarete Steiff in 1880, the eponymously named German brand is a cult soft toy manufacturer with over 135 years of savoir-faire. Wheelchair bound from the age of two, the founder’s story is one of incredible resilience and hard work. After years of training as a seamstress and working in the family tailor business, Margarete opened Steiff Manufacture with a small run of stuffed elephants. The toy soon became a children’s favourite, selling over 5000 within the first six years of business, and by 1892 the Steiff print catalogue boasted a whole menagerie of stuffed animals as well as Margerete’s motto: “for children, only the best is good enough!”. More than 130 years later, Steiff still holds itself to this promise: using only top-quality materials such as mohair and alpaca in their stuffed animals and teddy bears.
